How to Play Sudoku Step by Step: A Beginner's Guide That Actually Clicks

A Sudoku grid looks like a maths test. It isn't one. There is no arithmetic anywhere in this game — not a single sum. What it asks for is systematic elimination, and that is a skill you can pick up in one sitting, provided you learn the two techniques in the right order.

Sudoku in 60 seconds

If you have never solved one, this is everything you need to start:

  1. The goal: fill the empty cells so every row, every column and every 3×3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 once each.
  2. Start where it's crowded: find the box, row or column with the fewest empty cells.
  3. Ask what's missing: for one empty cell, cross out every digit already in its row, its column and its box. If a single digit is left, write it in.
  4. Flip the question when you stall: pick a digit and ask where it can still go inside one box.
  5. Never guess. Every properly made puzzle can be finished with logic alone.

The only rule

The grid holds 81 cells: nine rows, nine columns, and nine 3×3 boxes laid over the top. Some cells come filled in. Your job is the rest.

Every digit from 1 to 9 appears exactly once in each row, once in each column, and once in each 3×3 box.

That's the whole rulebook. There is no second rule hiding somewhere, and every so-called advanced technique is just a sharper way of applying that one sentence.

Notice too that the digits are labels, not quantities. Nothing gets added or compared. Replace them with nine colours and the puzzle is identical. Which is why people who dislike maths tend to do just fine here.

Read every cell three ways

Before any technique, train your eye on one fact: every empty cell belongs to three groups at once — its row, its column, and its box. Any digit already visible in any of the three is banned from that cell.

Try it right now on a grid in front of you. Pick an empty cell, count what's in its row, then its column, then its box. Whatever survives is that cell's candidate list. Everything you learn from here is about shrinking that list to one.

Technique one: the cell with only one option

The cleanest version: a box with eight digits filled and one gap.

That's the easy version. The one that matters more shows up when a cell looks open to several digits within its own box, until you check the row and knock two out, then check the column and knock out the rest. One survivor. This is why looking inside the box alone is never enough.

Where to hunt: the most crowded areas. A box holding seven digits will give up an answer far faster than a box holding three.

Technique two: the digit with only one home

This is where most beginners stall. They get comfortable with technique one, and the moment it stops producing answers they assume the puzzle now requires guesswork. It doesn't. It requires flipping the question around:

Instead of asking "which digit fits this cell?", ask "where can a 7 possibly go in this box?"

In practice: pick a box that's missing a 7. Look at the three rows running through it — any row that already contains a 7 rules out its three cells inside that box. Do the same with the three columns. If exactly one cell survives, that's where the 7 goes, even if that cell looked open to several other digits a moment ago.

Those two techniques together will carry you cleanly through most easy and medium puzzles, start to finish.

Pencil marks: worth it, but not yet

Pencil marks are the small candidate digits you jot inside a cell. They're a genuinely good tool, but timing decides whether they help or hurt:

Your first puzzle, step by step

Here is the routine to follow on any easy puzzle, in order. It turns the two techniques into a loop you can run without stopping to wonder what to try next.

  1. Scan for the densest group. Run your eye across the nine boxes, then the rows, then the columns, and pick whichever has the fewest gaps.
  2. Try technique one on every gap in it. For each empty cell, rule out what its row, column and box already hold. Fill any cell left with a single candidate.
  3. Switch to technique two in the same area. Take each missing digit in turn and ask where it can still go. Fill any digit left with a single home.
  4. Re-check the neighbours of every digit you place. A new digit removes a candidate from twenty other cells, and that is usually where the next answer appears.
  5. Move to the next densest group and repeat steps 2 to 4.
  6. Only when a full pass finds nothing, bring out pencil marks — and only in the one region where you are stuck.

Why twenty? A cell shares its row with 8 others and its column with 8 more. Its box adds 8, but 4 of those already sit in the same row or column, which leaves 4 new ones. 8 + 8 + 4 = 20.

Your next step up: the naked pair

Once the first two techniques feel automatic, this is the one that opens hard puzzles. If two cells inside the same group — box, row or column — can each hold only the same two digits, say 4 and 9 and nothing else, you don't know which cell takes which. But you know for certain that both digits are spoken for.

The payoff: you can strike 4 and 9 out of every other cell in that group. That elimination alone often triggers a chain of answers.

Five habits that slow beginners down

  1. Guessing when you stall. A wrong digit doesn't announce itself. It surfaces ten moves later, by which point you can't tell where things went wrong and the grid is a write-off.
  2. Working corner to corner. A grid isn't text to be read left to right. Start wherever the digits are densest.
  3. Never flipping the question. Ask only about cells and never "where does this digit go?", and you leave half the available answers on the table.
  4. Reaching for pencil marks early, before the obvious moves are exhausted, turning the grid into clutter.
  5. Racing the clock too soon. Speed is a by-product of fluency. Chase it first and you build a guessing habit instead.

A two-week route to medium

Consistency beats duration here. Ten minutes daily builds the skill faster than two hours once a week.

Mini Sudoku: learning on a 4×4 grid

If the 9×9 grid feels like too much at once, mini Sudoku is the same game shrunk down. The rule doesn't change — only the numbers do:

Both techniques work exactly as they do on the full grid, and a 4×4 puzzle is small enough to finish in a minute or two. That makes it a good place to get the row–column–box check into your fingers before moving up.
